An Open Letter to my Body

My Dearest Body,

First and most importantly, I have decided to love you. You work so hard for me. Next, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for all the times I've criticized and demeaned you. I'm sorry that I ever hated my bumps, stripes, curves, rolls, bruises, hair, and skin. I'm sorry for the times that I didn't think that you were good enough to be loved. I'm sorry for the times I didn't feed you when you were hungry, and I'm sorry for the times I didn't give you enough nourishment.

So, what do we do now? I choose to love you, and I'm going to show it. From now on, I will do my very best to remember that you are a gift. My body, the only one that I have. I will praise your beauty and hard work, and I will not allow comparison to others to steal away my joy. I will feed you when you are hungry. I will spend more time making you stronger. I will nourish you. Sometimes, I will even tell you 'no' when you want something that isn't in your best interest.

I'm starting to think of you as my first experience parenting. You are a responsibility that will never leave me, so I should not waste any more time disliking you. You're mine, and you're here to stay.

Right now, you are good enough. Right now, you are beautiful. However, improvement is always a goal. That's what parents want, isn't it? For their children to be the best that they can be. I will do my best to not push you too hard, but I also will try to keep you from getting lazy. Things are going to be better between you and I from now on, because I accept you. And I love you.

Your steward and keeper,
